Whangarei Walks

Hatea Track

Whangarei has numerous walks on the fringes of town some of which are at A H Reed Park and the upper reaches of the Hatea River. They start at Whareora Road off Mill Road and about ten minutes from the centre of town. Both walks are well marked and part of the A H Reed park walk is accessible to wheelchairs.
The Hatea branch leaves at the car park and follows the Hatea River to the Whangarei Falls. The first part is through native bush and follows into a grass area. This is an easy walk for all ages and takes about 1/2 hour each way. Towards the end of the grassed area is a swing bridge taking you to the other side.
The track leads into more native bush again still on a very easy grade and next to the river. After a little while, the roar of the falls comes to ear. There are fantastic views to be had There is also a circuit track which zigzags to the top and back around to to the bridge below again. This is a little steeper but well worth the time and effort.

A H Reed Walkway

This track starts at the same place as The Hatea walk and does a circuit to another water fall. All this one is in New Zealand native bush where some fine stands of Kauri Trees can be seen from the Kauri boardwalk. Also the canopy track takes the walker through the tree tops over a seventeen metre valley. Continue up the track to the waterfall. The return trip is on the other side of the creek. This will take about 3/4 hour for the whole walk
