While travelling between Timaru
and Oamaru be sure to stop off at Waimate.
Waimate has a population of just under 3000 and boasts a nice shopping centre
including a supermarket and almost any other type of shop you could need.
As you get closer to the town, from the north, a white speck can be seen
near the top of the hill range behind the town. This White Horse was made
as a tribute to the Clydesdale horses that were used to break the surrounding
land into grass. There is a road, walking track and a mountain bike track to
the summit from which splendid views may be had.
While in Waimate district you may be lucky and spy a Wallaby or two. The easier
way to see some is to go to
Kelcey's Bush Farmyard Holiday Park.
The park is small but well run
and tidy. It is always a pleasure to stay there and the kids just loved it. They may
even be able to help feed the animals.
There are a few walks about Waimate One of which is at
Gunn's Bush
just
on the outskirts of town.
