Head East from Stratford at the roundabout of Broadway-
Regan Street Toward Taumarunui on
The Forgotten World Highway
(Highway 43). You will pass some of the older settlements of the Eastern Taranaki
district Toko (12kms) Douglas and Whangamomona (63kms). About 10 kms past
Whangamomona is the Moki Tunnel built in 1937. Just past here at the bottom of the
hill, turn left towards Okau. Mount Damper Falls are about twenty minutes along
this road. The walkway is signposted and there is room to park your car.
Step over the style and walk over the formed track beside the creek. The first ten
minutes are over an open farmland track. Follow the track till you cross the swing
bridge.
Here the bush starts. Slowly descend towards the bottom which will take
another ten minutes. A warning that the track is clay based and could be quite slippery
in adverse weather so take adequate footwear.
As
you get closer to the viewing platform you can get a glimpse of the valley below.
These falls are the second highest in New Zealand at 78 metres.
After returning to the car you can keep going the same way and exit at highway three. Turn left here and you are back on the road to New Plymouth.
