Dargavilleis the main town
of Kaipara's west coast and has a population of about 4500. Dargaville's
main business comes from dairy, horticulture and tourism.
You will notice how dirty the river looks. This I am told is due to the
swift currents not letting the mud particles settle. The further you go towards
Pouto Point
the clearer it gets. This river (Northern Wairoa) is the upper reaches of the
mighty Kaipara Harbour. The river is the longest navigable river in New Zealand.
The Kaipara Harbour is the largest harbour in the southern
hemisphere with over 300 km of coastline.
The closest of the west's Ripiro ocean beaches (Baylys Beach) are only
about a quarter hours drive away. From here if you wish you can drive south
along to the beach to Pouto or north to Maunganui Bluff but it is recommended
to be done within two hours either side of low tide. A four wheel drive vehicle
is advised as well as asking locals for any information regarding the beach
conditions. This coastline has 100km of drivable sand flanked by sometimes massive
sand dunes. These beaches are quite popular for fishing, netting, shellfish
gathering, driving along
or just walking.
